The British Cultural & Heritage Association

The 1820 Settlers Association of South Africa is a non-profit, non-political organisation originally set up in 1920 to promote the settling of English-speaking people into South Africa, but has evolved into an Association which promotes the best in British language, education, culture and heritage. The KZN Branch of the 1820s extended its name to the “British Cultural & Heritage Association” in May 1999 to be in line with current trends to be culturally identifiable and to reflect the change in focus of the Branch. We are moving into a new era where cultural differences are recognised and celebrated. The KZN Branch has many exciting events during the course of the year, the most popular being the 'St George’s Day Celebration' in April, the 'Queen’s Official Birthday' in June, the massed 'Orchestra' concert in August and the 'Last Night of the Proms' concert in October.

We also organise outings/Braai’s/Picnic’s and Tours as well as the Kindred Society Quiz every three months. More details of these and the many other activities are published in our Branch newsletter which is mailed to members every three months. Newsletters also include reports on past functions and useful information on a variety of relevant topics. Members enjoy discounted rates for Branch functions not to mention the fellowship and camaraderie at the interesting socials. There are opportunities for volunteering at our projects (such as the ‘Orchestra’ and Proms concerts) while simultaneously building friendships with other members.

The Association is a living memorial which perpetuates the memory of the 1820 settlers. You do not need to be British to become a member! Membership is open to anyone who identifies with the aims and objectives of the Association. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need any further information.
